I find it funny that people are bitching about the fact that Google have collected ‘Private’ data from peoples Wireless networks.
In an article over the the New Zealand Herald website Google sorry for collecting data Google is apologizing for collecting information from open/unsecured wireless networks.
If you are really that concerned about your bloody privacy, at least take the intuitive to protect your data by securing your network with a password. How many of you bitching about Google having ‘your data’ actually realize that if Google have it, who else does. More to the point, what are those other people doing with it.
If you’re stupid enough to run an open wifi network and transmit your private lives over it, what do you expect. Not everyone is a model citizen and there are many who will steal your stuff. It’s a fact of life. Get over it. Do you go to the supermarket and leave your car unlocked with the keys in the ignition.
Come on, Common sense is not that difficult surely.
Well, I took the plunge today and have installed Ubuntu Linux 10.04 code named ‘Lucid Lynx’.
Overall, I’m pretty impressed with the new version of Ubuntu. I do how ever have a couple of gripes which are problably more just minor annoyances than anything. Thunderbird I dislike, time will tell wheather that will change. As it stands I think Thunderbird 3.0.4 looks horrible. I might have to look at Evolution again.
Flash video’s did not work after the upgrade from 9.04, I had to rip out the flash pkgs and re-install them. Minor thing really, but the re-install fixed the issue.
Gwibber doesn’t seem to appear on the system tray anymore. When I close the window it closes it and I need to go through the menus to re-load it. Maybe I’m missing something, also one of my Twitter accounts seems to have been misplaced.
Bilbo blogger has now changed it’s name to Blogilo, thats cool. I have no problem with a name change, but it didn’t migrate my blog accounts over. I had to add all my blog accounts to it. Again a minor thing which only took up a few minutes. But it would have been nice if it migrated the settings / blog accounts across.
Firefox lost it’s icon on the menu, Not that I use Firefox (Chrome is my browser of choice), I thought it rather odd that it lost the icon however. Editing the menu and putting it back fixed it
All in all, I think Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx at this stage is looking pretty impressive.
I’ve had a few questions sent in to me, asking how I got my Tweetmeme and Facebook Share buttons back on WordPress 2.9.
Here’s how I did it.
First of all, Setup Tweetmeme and Facebook share to “Manual” on the settings page for the plugin.
Edit your themes ‘index.php’ and ‘single.php’
find something like
<?php the_content(__(‘Continue Reading »’)); ?>
And replace it with something like
<?php echo tweetmeme(); echo fbshare_manual(); the_content(__(‘Continue Reading »’)); ?>
There maybe other files that need to be modified in order to display the buttons on archive pages if you theme has them.
From what I can gather this is only an issue for sites running less than PHP 5.2 – Can anyone let me know if this is an issue on PHP 5.2.
I have sent emails to the authors but have not received a response from either.
Well, with the pending release of WordPress 2.9 things are looking good on the WordPress front.
As you may know, I’ve been running WordPress 2.9-rare for quite a while and have since gone through the beta releases and now one of my sites is sitting on WordPress 2.9-RC1.
While it took me some time to get use to the new ‘Trash’ feature and having to remember to empty it. I have a couple of plugin issues with Tweetmeme and Facebook Share (new) but other than those buttons no longer displaying on 2.9 due to some code changes, I’m liking the new version. Hopefully plugin developers will sort out the issues. If not then loosing a couple of plugins really isn’t an issue for me.
The new wp.me url shortening in WordPress.com stats is pretty cool, though for me what would be even cooler is the ability to auto tweet using the wp.me short url, but that’s a minor thing really.
So, all in all. I think a WP 2.9 release is going to be a pretty cool Christmas present from the Automattic team.
If you want to try WordPress 2.9-RC1 you can download it here.
Well well, What do you know, the Podpress developer has come out of the wood work and announced that Podpress is back under development.
I’m sorry, 2 years of nothing from a developer I would consider it abandoned. In fact I had. I switched to Blubrry Powerpress not long after the WordPress 2.7.1 update by memory. May have even been earlier than that.
Would I go back to a package that had been abandoned for 2 years? Hell no! What’s to say in 6 months time the same thing doesn’t happen again. Then I’d be at square one again with a plugin that’s not going to be fixed / upgraded if problems arise.
I’m firmly sticking with the @blubrry Powerpress plugin. The blubrry powerpress team have a vested interest in maintaining their plugin. Not only that, their support is second to none and their services are just the icing on the cake.
Honestly I would not trust a wordpress plugin that has a history of being abandoned to control my podcasting feeds or iTunes info. But that’s just me.
I have no problem if those people who are die hard fans of podpress run it, Great there’s nothing wrong with multiple podcasting plugins for wordpress. In fact I’m sure it just makes Powerpress even more powerful and more advanced than those already out there
Well, @blubrry have done it again. The team at blubrry have superseded all expectations once again.
I’m one of the lucky ones who get to test Powerpress 1.0.0beta before it’s official release and what can I say. There are some really cool new features and the layout is just awesome.
The powerpress podcast plugin has just taken WordPress Podcasting to the next level.
Angelo has done an excellent job with the new features, I think alot of people will be scrambling to migrate to Powerpress 1.0 when it is released.
I’ve installed the new Beta of Powerpress on this site and my other business / primary podcast sites.
While I’m not sure if I’m going to be using the Premium Content Feed capabilities initially, it’s nice to be able to have the option for the future. Especially with one of my podcasts, I can see the benefit of “premium content” in the future.
What else can I say, If you’re looking at setting up a podcast on WordPress, or you already have a podcast setup with WordPress, You’d be silly not to at least give Powerpress 1.0 a look in when it is released.
No other WordPress podcast plugin is evolving as fast as Powerpress. The support from the @blubrry team is outstanding.
For those that are hell bent on the likes of Podpress or Podcasting, I think you’ll be impressed with Powerpress 1.0
Ok, So I setup a podcast on a business website of ours. I found what I thought was a great plugin for WordPress which in turn I liked. It had nice setup features and good player placement customization.
I then started to think, maybe some of the others are better.
I’ve just installed WordPress MU on blogit.co.nz, Having done so I’m now migrating my Blogs as well as setting up some others for family members.
I am extremely impressed with WordPress MU. I kind of wish I started with it earlier.
I hope to get everything migrated over to this site over the next few days. So keep an eye on this one.
Ok, This made me laugh. Though I can see the point of view that popular applications are targeted more often by the little weasels who put out such programs.

Maybe the brainless just need to stop using Computers no matter what Operating System / Browser combination they use.
C’mon, it really isn’t that hard to keep ones computer free of the evil stuff, Is it? Well, ok maybe for some people it is. I would hate to count the number of PC’s I’ve seen that have no anti-virus, firewall or the likes setup. Let alone the number of unsecured wireless networks around our area.
