Lynksys WAG54g Ethernet ports

Posted under Technology by Kimberly on Saturday 26 July 2008 at 9:44 pm UTC

Well, After performing very well for the last few years, my Linksys WAG54g ADSL Router is now not much more than a brick.

Over the past few days we have been having intermittent outages of the wired network. (Eg: my servers kept dropping off the network) Wireless and ADSL connection were not effected.

Fortunately my D-Link 504 and my Linksys WRT54g are still in tact so I was able to rebuild the network and bridge my WRT54g and D-Link quickly. (Not what a girl wants to be doing on a Saturday) :(

I won’t however be buying a new Linksys WAG54g. After a little research it seems to be a common issue. I don’t know if the network was spiked or not but I think I’ll go back to using D-Link hardware. Sorry Linksys.

But this seems to have happened to a lot of people on a lot of occasions. You have lost my business for your network equipment

Acer Aspire 4315 Laptop

Posted under Technology by Kimberly on Saturday 19 July 2008 at 5:38 pm UTC

Acer Aspire 4315 I just bought a new Acer Aspire 4315 Laptop from Dick Smith which came with Ubuntu Hardy Heron. I have to admit I am very impressed with it. I had a little issue with the wireless drivers but it was easily fixed. The only bit that isn’t supported is the 56k modem, as it is linked with the sound system I read that getting the modem to run can screw up the whole install so I won’t bother looking into it. I don’t use 56k modem’s for net connections, It’s either wired or wireless so the modem not running does not bother me in the slightest. The rest of the hardware was supported out of the box with out me having to go though and struggle setting setting up hardware drivers. Skype does some problems with the capture device and I still have a problem with it resetting the capture volumes back to 0, but I don’t see it as too much of an issue at the moment.

I have yet to try my webcam, I will have to do that when I get home as we are in Auckland until Monday. Over all I am very pleased with the Acer and it was cheaper than I was expecting plus it came with a free upgrade to 1gig of ram.

Stupid people

Well, We’re in Auckland at the moment. We did however arrive a day early.

We were suppose to have been booked into the Lake Front Motor Lodge in Taupo for Tuesday night. Yeah Right. Even after confirming the booking when we got there the moron owner had no record of us and didn’t really seem to care. So much for customer service. We will never stay there again.

We had stayed there previously and enjoyed the time, though as it turns out the people we delt with then were ‘minders’ Well, employ your minders full time. They did a better job than the owners.

Luckily we managed to get into Auckland around 7:30pm on Tuesday night, so it wasn’t too late by the time we got here.

100% Not Yours

I had to laugh when I saw the two mock ads that came out of a couple of Australian advertising agencies trying to win a TV show competition trying to convince the Australian public as to why they should invade New Zealand.

Personally I liked the one from 303 as it had some nice shots of NZ, though the one from Marmalade did promise a holiday. :D

I’m not sure how long they will be up but you can see the two ads Here.

Wireless with NDISWrapper

Even if your Wireless lan adapter isn’t supported natively by the kernel drivers, there is another method to get drivers installed.

For this you simply need the Windows 9x/XP drivers for your specific adapter. On my system I was installing for the Acer (??) WarpLink 802.11b Adapter. you can use lsusb or lspci to find out the name of your adapter and search for drivers online if you need to.

Weblog Extension

Posted under Technology by Kimberly on Tuesday 8 July 2008 at 4:25 pm UTC

Just testing Sun’s Weblog Publisher.

Yep, I just shelled out $9.95USD ($13.23NZD) for an OpenOffice extension.

Actually it seems to be pretty good so far. I guess even if it was not as good as it looks I can justify supporting Sun considering they give us a free Office Suite.

Hopefully there should be an image included.. :)

New Boots

So I’m a boots girl… :)

A girl can never have too many pairs so while we were shopping for some for Sarah I just couldn’t pass up the opportunity when I saw these.

While I’m not exactly short, now I can be taller than dad. hahah.. :D

Banshee or Amarok

Posted under Technology by Kimberly on Sunday 6 July 2008 at 7:09 pm UTC

When I first installed Fedora 9 I discovered Banshee which I felt was a pretty good media player which had good library facility however I could not get Banshee to see my Ipod shuffle.

I happened to be browsing through the Add/Remove software Multimedia section when I found Amarok.

Lazy Sunday

Posted under General by Kimberly on Sunday 6 July 2008 at 5:34 pm UTC

Well. It’s too cold to do anything outside, though the sun was shining. What else is there to do. Well me and the kids made some Ginger Bread Men. Well at least that was the plan.

They look more like over fed teddy bears but they don’t taste too bad so I guess that’s a bonus. I can cook up a website but baking is not something I tend to do a lot of. :)

Though it was good to spend time away from technology, which is something I seem to be doing more often.

Traffic lights are there for a reason

Posted under General by Kimberly on Friday 4 July 2008 at 11:17 pm UTC

Ok, My understanding is that when you are stopped at a red traffic light you stayed stopped until the lights changed to green.

Am I wrong on this. I don’t really want to test it. But today we had someone do just that.

We were sitting at a red light with a car next to us turning right who was also stopped, or so we thought. It was as though the driver had fallen asleep with an automatic car and their foot had come off the break. Before we knew it. This car was half way through the bloody intersection. Stunned all Sarah & I could do was look at each other shaking our heads laughing. I don’t know what the people in the car behind them thought.

Now, It is fortunate that there was no traffic coming from the opposite direction or this could have been a serious accident. Do people not take their lives seriously. Hell, we’ve even had a TV advertising campaign about taking risks at intersections. I just don’t get the mentallity of some drivers. As it was we were there for a good minute before the lights turned green.
